Academic Opportunities

Slippery Rock is the only university

offering an undergraduate academic program in

Nonprofit Management in the state of Pennsylvania.

A minor in nonprofit leadership was established at SRU in 1995. As student interest in the program grew, the University became a collegiate affiliate with the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA), the nation's only organization that offers certification for entry-level nonprofit professionals. The Alliance affiliation existed from 2000-2014, budget constraints forced the university to disaffiliate but were able to re-affiliated in Spring 2018. The affiliation with NLA allows SRU students to attend the annual Alliance Management Institute and earn the Alliance's Certified Nonprofit Professional designation.

The 42 credit major includes six core courses, an area of emphasis and an internship. The emphasis area is identified through advisement and will focus on either a service delivery area or nonprofit management skills. Today there are 60 undergraduates who are seeking a degree in Interdisciplinary Programs with a concentration in Philanthropy & Nonprofit Management. Those pursuing this degree can earn it as a bachelor or a minor on campus. In 2017, it was launched as an online degree completion and are currently 10 students enrolled online.
